For the seasoned diver, an International Diving Emergency Card or IDEC is not enough. It would be wise to purchase a travel insurance to augment the benefits provided by the IDEC. A travel insurance coupled with an IDEC will provide comprehensive coverage for the diver and every member of the family.

Divers usually travel around the world in search of the most beautiful and challenging diving sites which is the more reason that they have the utmost protection during their trips. In purchasing travel insurance for divers, it would be a wise decision to have an insurer with worldwide coverage that includes and not limited to medical and repatriation insurance.

There are as many destinations as reasons why people travel. Some frequently travel for business reasons; others because it is a hard earned and well deserved vacation, while some travel because of sports. There are a number of amateur and professional athletes that need to travel to different parts of the world in order to compete. And yet there are many travelers who just want to experience the sport. For the sports traveler, it is important that he secures a travel insurance that will provide protection for him that is relative to the sport he will undertake during his trip. Not all travel insurances provide protection for sports so it is important that the traveler check that whether he is going sailing, scuba diving, skiing, hiking, golfing or doing extreme sports, that he receives ample protection in case of injury or accident.

Travel insurance is insurance that covers financial, medical, and other expenses when traveling. Travel insurances apply to both local and international travel and can be arranged for the time of the trip itself or at a more extensive and continuous coverage. However, there are only certain specifics that are covered by travel insurance policies. Any additional coverage would also result in additional payments.

Here are the coverages provided by a basic travel insurance policy, although not all of it:
1. Cancellation of Travel
2. Curtailment
3. Delay in departure
4. Loss or theft of belongings including travel documents
5. Delayed baggage
6. Medical expenses
7. Emergency evacuation or repatriation
8. Overseas funeral expenses
9. Accidental injury, disability or death
10. Legal assistance
11. Personal liability and damage to rental car

Some more things to research before you begin your travel away from home:

Do you need a passport or visa to enter the country? If yes, be sure that it is still valid and up to date. Check if there are safety warnings for tourists at your destination. Find out if there are vaccinations or medications that you need to take before, during and after your trip. Learn about the exchange rates so that you can budget in advance. Research with Customs to know what you can bring and what you can’t. Study basic language skills in the local language. Also, be familiar with the metric system : most of the world uses this.

What papers do you need? What diseases are common? What medical coverage would you have when you’re away from home? Have you purchased travel insurance? Will a holiday or a festival be held during your trip? It is possible that service would be limited during these days.

Trip Protection plans typically reimburse your non-refundable travel expenses if an unexpected crises (e.g., death, sickness, airline strike, travel company bankruptcy, among other crises) occurs before or during your trip causing it to be cancelled, interrupted or delayed. Plans often provide reimbursement for:

Emergency medical evacuation

Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D)

Repatriation of remains

Travel assistance services

Although the maximum benefit limits for medical expenses are generally not as high as in Travel Medical Insurance, many companies have recently increased these benefits and there is usually no deductible or co-pay.

Most plans exclude Pre-existing Conditions but will waive the exclusion if the insurance is purchased within a certain amount of time (7 – 21 days depending on plan) after payment of the initial trip deposit.
Recently some companies have changed their waiver qualification criteria. They state that they will waive the Pre-existing Condition exclusions if you purchase within 24 hours of making your final trip payment,

The cost of insurance or “premium” for Trip Protection plans is based on a percentage of Trip Cost, which is the amount of money that a traveler has pre-paid or is otherwise obligated to pay to a travel supplier (e.g., airline, travel agent, tour operator, hotel, cruiseline, Internet booking service) that might not be refunded if a trip is cancelled, according to the given circumstances and wording of the cancellation terms and conditions indicated in the travel purchase agreement between a traveler and travel supplier.

Rental car insurance, also known as collision damage waiver (CDW), may be included, or purchased as an upgrade, or purchased separately as a stand-alone plan.
